Dougal & Hixxy's Essential Platinum were one of the first labels to push the boundaries of happy hardcore. With the 4 beat kicks recently added to the original breakbeat style, they concentrated more on delivering a tougher and up tempo sound with highly recognisable synth stabs, vocals and manic riffs. The groundbreaking instrumental 'Toytown' was a perfect example of this. It's an ongoing argument over likeability but nevertheless any happy hardcore fan cannot disagree it was slightly ahead of it's time and was the catalyst for many big records to come. An unforgettable anthem in my eyes.

Essential Platinum was an extremely popular label, so many great artists wanting a piece of the action including Fade, Bananaman, Trixxy, Druid and even Force & Styles. Their '96 classic 'Fireworks' was a favourite amongst many of the top hardcore DJ's aswell as the late John Peel.

Love or hate some of these releases, they will go down in hardcore history.
