DJ Premier explains how he ended up working on this song, through a chance meeting with Anderson Paak.
“[Dr. Dre and I] have always been connected, but I never worked with Dre. And even on this album, it all came together by accident, through a meeting with Anderson Paak. I was in Moscow, Russia, doing a project with a top Russian producer. I don’t usually collab with producers, because I don’t need to. I never have, because I don’t want to break my style of how I do things. But then I got this offer to do something using Russian music and samples, with MF Doom rapping on it.
I was totally into it because me and DOOM had just done a record. We already had one in the can, and I was doing one for DOOM in return, as a swap. So, now we were going to do another record in Moscow this time with a producer BMB SpaceKid. But DOOM apparently got sick and had that surgery, and couldn’t fly for health reasons. So the organizers suggested a singer called Anderson Paak who I had never heard of. They sent me some links and video footage to see if I still wanted to do the project or cancel."

Anderson describes the black man from the low class of Compton, California as unpolished and rough-hewn but simultaneously grand and majestic, proving the upper class that belittles him wrong.
He does so by stomping on demons and calls his hometown “the belly of the beast”, a nickname already used previously to express how the city is rough but contrasting it with the serene act of smoking weed.
